Volunteering as Peer Support: Building Confidence Through Shared Experience
Part of the CFO Volunteer Blog Series
There’s something special that happens when someone says:
“I’ve been there too.”
Volunteering at CFO isn’t just about helping with tasks — it’s about creating space for people to connect through lived experience. Many of our volunteers are walking their own recovery or reentry journeys. And when they step into volunteer roles, they don’t just give back — they help build a path forward for others.
That’s peer support in action. And it changes everything.
Walking Alongside, Not Above
Peer-based volunteering says:
“We’ve both struggled.”
“We both have value.”
“We can figure it out — together.”
Whether it’s someone helping in group sessions, welcoming a new face at the front desk, or co-hosting an activity, it’s that shared experience that creates a sense of safety, belonging, and possibility.
Confidence Through Contribution
Many people come to CFO feeling unsure of their worth. Trauma, stigma, and systems can do that.
But when someone begins volunteering and sees others benefit from their presence — that changes.
They think:
“I helped someone today.”
“I said something that mattered.”
“I’m good at this.”
“I am capable.”
That’s not just confidence. That’s healing.
Peer Support Starts Before the Job Title
You don’t have to be a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist to be a peer.
At CFO, we see peer support show up in:
Volunteers sharing a kind word over coffee
Someone showing a new participant how to sign in
Helping others navigate a resource or event
Co-facilitating activities with staff
Just… being real with someone who needs it
It’s not about perfection — it’s about presence.
