Centers for Opportunity (CFO) offers you a way to make a difference.

By joining our Board of Directors as a volunteer, you can use your leadership skills to support individuals challenged by mental illness, substance use disorder, homelessness, or food insecurity.

About CFO

Centers for Opportunity (CFO) provides a wide range of peer support and related services throughout Northern Virginia for adults living with mental health challenges, substance use disorder, or homelessness.

We offer:

  • Peer support groups and one-on-one sessions

  • Employment assistance

  • Computer labs, Wi-Fi, and landline phone access

  • Recreational therapy and social opportunities

  • Community referrals and connections

Our five centers collectively support approximately 9,000 adults each year.

Our mission, focus in the health and human services sector, and our strong commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) guide everything we do.

We seek Board Members who:

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to addressing mental health and substance use challenges.

  • Represent diverse communities, particularly women and persons of color.

  • May be peers in recovery who bring lived experience to their leadership.

Open Board Positions

We are seeking multiple volunteer Directors with expertise in the following areas:

1. Nonprofit Leadership & Development

  • Experience in nonprofit management, governance, or capacity building.

  • Background in supporting other nonprofits to improve specialized services and skills.

2. Community-Based Services

  • Experience delivering or managing programs that serve individuals with mental health or substance use challenges.

  • Backgrounds in clinical psychology, social work, or education are especially welcome.

  • Peers in recovery are encouraged to apply.

3. Event Management, Outreach, & Fundraising

  • Skills in community outreach, event planning, marketing, and fundraising.

  • Ability to expand CFO’s visibility and community engagement.

4. Finance, Audit, & Accounting

  • Expertise in financial oversight or nonprofit accounting.

  • Experience on audit or finance committees preferred.

Board Member Recruitment 2025

Overview

  • Volunteer position with a two-year term.

  • Requires an average of 3–6 hours per month, depending on your role.

  • Candidates must reside in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

  • The Board meets virtually each month and in person once annually in Northern Virginia.

  • CFO is committed to building a diverse and inclusive Board of Directors.

Roles

  • Support and advance CFO’s mission, goals, and policies.

  • Help shape long-range plans and strategic direction.

  • Uphold CFO’s integrity, independence, and ideals.

  • Provide guidance to the Executive Director on priorities, operations, development, and fundraising.

  • Exercise fiduciary responsibility, ensuring oversight of financials, audits, and performance against goals.

Responsibilities

  • Commit to the mission, goals, and values of CFO.

  • Attend and actively participate in Board meetings (including at least one in-person meeting per year).

  • Contribute your experience and expertise to Board discussions and decisions.

  • Recommend potential Board members or volunteers who align with CFO’s mission.

  • Avoid conflicts of interest and maintain ethical standards.

  • Stay informed about CFO’s programs and the communities we serve.
