At Centers for Opportunity (CFO), our volunteers don’t just fill roles — they light the way.

Often they show up early.
Sometimes, they volunteer to stay a little later.
They always lend a hand, share a smile, and often quietly transform lives.

And today, we want to introduce you to a few of them — because their stories aren’t just about giving back. They’re about growing forward.

“It helped me believe I still had something to offer.”

When T. first came to CFO, she wasn’t sure where to begin. She was rebuilding her life after a long period of instability and loss. A staff member gently suggested a volunteer role helping set up for workshops.

“At first, I didn’t think I could do much. But they trusted me — even when I didn’t trust myself. That’s what got me back on my feet.”

Today, T. is pursuing certification in peer support. She still volunteers — now mentoring others who are just starting out.

“I never saw myself as a ‘people person’—but this changed that.”

J. joined CFO’s employment program after years of working behind the scenes in warehouse jobs. Volunteering at the front desk gave him new perspective — and new confidence.

“It’s the first time I felt like people saw me — not just what I could lift or stock.”

Now, J. is training for a role in community outreach — and looking into part-time courses to build his admin skills.

“It was a place to practice showing up for myself.”

M. describes herself as quiet. Volunteering helped her build routine, reduce anxiety, and feel part of something.

“Knowing people expected me — and appreciated me — changed how I felt about myself.”

She now helps coordinate clothing drives and recently helped design a flyer for one of our peer wellness events. Her creative eye and thoughtful presence have become part of what makes our center feel like home.

Why These Stories Matter

Volunteering isn’t just about helping others — it’s about discovering who you are, what you love, and what’s possible.

It can be:

  • A first step back into the world after isolation
  • A way to explore new interests and roles
  • A practice space for confidence, connection, and consistency
  • A reminder that what you bring — just as you are — is valuable
