A Special Feature on Good Morning Washington

This week, we’re celebrating a moment that warmed our hearts—and aired on live TV! 7News WJLA featured The Nysmith School and their inspiring community service project supporting Centers for Opportunity (CFO). It was part of the Spotlight on Education series, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

Third Graders Taking the Lead

Each year, students in the Lower School at Nysmith participate in a hands-on service project. With help from the school’s PTA, each grade partners with a charity. This year, the third graders chose to support CFO by collecting essential toiletries.

They’re gathering items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, tissues, and more. These simple items go directly to adults in our programs who are rebuilding their lives through employment support, wellness programs, and peer mentorship.

Learning Through Giving

Social studies teacher Nicole Vlattas explained that this project isn’t just about collecting goods—it’s about building empathy and community awareness.

“Social studies is always about community,” she said. “We help students understand that something small, like one toothbrush, can really change someone’s day.”

The students are also learning to take initiative. One student explained that they’re doing this “to help people who don’t have them.” It’s a powerful lesson in compassion and leadership.

Planting Seeds for Future Service

The toiletry drive is just the beginning. Nysmith introduces service early so students can take the lead on larger projects as they grow. For example, students in the upper school recently hosted an international bazaar and donated the proceeds to a sister school. By starting young, they build skills that will carry them forward as changemakers.

A Heartfelt Thank You

At CFO, we believe that kindness builds community. These students—and their families and teachers—are making a lasting impact through thoughtful action.
