SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Benefits & Work Requirements – What You Need to Know
If you’re receiving SNAP benefits, it’s important to understand the work requirements needed to keep them. In Virginia, adults between the ages of 18 and 54 who don’t qualify for an exemption must either:
- Work at least 20 hours per week
- Participate in a work program
- Meet other approved activity requirements
If these requirements aren’t met, SNAP benefits are limited to just three months in a three-year period.
Who is Exempt from Work Requirements?
Not everyone is required to meet these work requirements. You may be exempt if you are:
- A veteran
- A person with a temporary or permanent disability
- Unhoused
- A full-time student
- Already working 20+ hours per week
If you’re unsure about your SNAP benefits eligibility or exemption status, your local Department of Social Services can help.
